Cons Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

The huge debate over the pros and cons of embryonic stem cell research has been going on for quite some time now. Ever since this sort of research came into the public eye people tend to be firmly on one side or the other. Supporters of this type of research point out just how many people can be saved or cured in the future because the study of these cells will show how to ward off, or cure, such debilitating diseases as cancer, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. This is simply a sample of the diseases that can be addressed through embryonic stem cell research.

Then there is the other side of the fence where the people who vehemently oppose embryonic stem cell research can be found. Their biggest opposition is that the cells, or blastocysts, an only be obtained through destroying the embryo. From their point of view, it is considered to be murder. However, they do not consider the fact that no one is suggesting that viable embryos be murdered.

Another thing that people see as a con to this type of research is that there have been no positive developments reported as of yet. To the contrary, several studies have had negative results. In medical studies using rats and mice, the embryonic stem cells have been the cause of brain tumors. The same studies have also connected embryonic stem cells to being the cause of chromosomal issues that actually create cancer cells. Both scientists and researchers have said that it will take many years of research before any cures are found.

Others in opposition of embryonic stem cell research feel that more money and time should be spent with adult cell and umbilical cord cell research. Regarding the funding for this research, there are many people railing against using government funding for it. Most states have used money for this research through large universities located there.
